Quick start propels Huskies into second round

From Mirror reports

KANE — The Bishop Carroll boys basketball team got off to a fast start Friday night, jumping out to a 20-12 lead on North Clarion en route to a 68-58 win in the first round of the PIAA Class 1A playoffs at Kane Area High School.

“I thought right at the beginning, when we got some steals with the press and went up 7-0, that was big because it took away a lot of their rhythm on offense,” Carroll coach Cosie Aliquo said.

North Clarion coach Andy Bish admitted his club was thrown off by Carroll’s swarming defensive pressure.

“They were real quick, quick hands, getting steals and deflections. That’s what hurt us,” said Bish, whose District 9 runnerup team finished at 21-4. “It was kind of all or nothing for us. Either they were going to get a turnover or we were going to get a wide open layup. They just simply got more than we did.”

Tristan McDannell scored nine of his 22 points in the second quarter for Carroll as the Huskies (20-5) took a 35-28 halftime lead.

“Once Nolan (Burk) was out, somebody had to step up and McDannell certainly did. He has stepped up all year and is a big reason why we are here,” said Aliquo, who watched Burk go to the bench early in foul trouble.

The Wolves got as close as four (44-40) in the third quarter, but the Huskies were able to extend it to 51-42 by the end of the frame. McDannell scored seven more points.

The Wolves got as close as six points in the final frame (56-50) but again, the Huskies had too much balance on offense. Carson Ertter finished with 15 points to go with 13 points from Alex Karlheim.

North Clarion got 30 points from 6-foot-7 big man Kyle Mills, but Aliquo said he could live with that in his postgame comments.

“He’s going to get his 30, as long as we don’t let some other guys get 20 and 20. We held them to 10 and 10 and we weathered the storm,” Aliquo said.

Bishop Carroll will play Monessen, which defeated Jamestown, on Tuesday.
