BG’s top scorer cleared to play in title tilt

From Mirror reports

Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School senior Luke Ruggery will be hoping to flash a big toothy smile late Friday afternoon.

Ruggery received emergency dental work late Tuesday night and will be starting in Friday’s 2 p.m. PIAA Class 2A championship basketball game against Math, Civics & Sciences Charter School at Hershey’s Giant Center.

Ruggery took an accidental elbow from teammate Michael Montecalvo to the mouth late in the first half of Tuesday’s 62-61 PIAA semifinal victory over Our Lady of Sacred Heart at Kiski Area High School in Vandergrift.

Ruggery’s upper right central incisor was broken off at the gum line, and the left one was displaced significantly. He finished the game and led BG with 21 points.

After getting back to Altoona after Tuesday’s game around 11 p.m., Ruggery met with a dentist, Dr. Bryan Cioffari, and orthodontists Drs. Mike Reed and Jack Sahlaney.

Reed and Sahlaney stabilized his teeth with braces, and Cioffari did the majority of the cosmetic work that kept Ruggery in a dentist chair until approximately 1:30 a.m.

Ruggery also met with an endodontist on Wednesday.

He has been fitted for a mouth piece and was given a full clearance to play Friday but will need permanent dental work at some point in the near future.

BG is making its first-ever PIAA finals appearance.
