Altoona gets some revenge

Almost exactly one month ago, the Altoona girls basketball team lost by 11 at Central Dauphin. The second meeting between the two teams went much for the Lady Lions.

Altoona got 22 points and 14 rebounds from Bridgid Fox in a 54-35 win over the Lady Rams Friday at the AAHS Fieldhouse.

“Bridgid does whatever we need her to do,” Altoona coach Miriam Colledge said. “She’s tough on the boards. She hits shots. She puts in a yeoman’s effort. She’s a complete player.”

The Lady Lions led wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. Stevie Webber and Caranda Perea knocked down early 3-pointers, and Fox followed a Adaliz Corbin miss for two more points.

Later in the opening quarter, Fox knocked down a pair of treys, and Brooklynn Rupert added another for an 18-10 edge at the end of the first stanza.

Altoona (9-6, 8-3 in the Mid-Penn Conference) went up 10 points midway through the second quarter. Perea’s backdoor layup off an assist from Fox out of the high post started an 9-3 spurt that gave the Lady Lions a 35-21 halftime lead.

Fox finished the half with 16 points.

“Fox had an amazing first half. She really killed us,” CD coach Randolph Gambelunghe said. “We really don’t a great matchup for her. They made some nice adjustments from the last game.”

Altoona scored just six points in the third quarter, but Central Dauphin was only able to shave four points off the Lady Lions lead.

Three Lady Lions were in foul trouble heading to the fourth quarter. Perea and Webber had three fouls. Point guard Adalynn Cherry picked up her fourth on a charging call with five seconds left in the third quarter.

None of them fouled out, and the team pushed the lead to 16 with an 8-2 run early in the final period. Fox put in three buckets, and Perea made a jump shot from the baseline.

“They’ve figured out how to play with foul trouble. We have players who are smart enough and know how to stay in the game,” Colledge said.

Perea sealed the win with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:32 left in the game. She finished with 11 points.

“We’re playing more together as the season goes on. The turnovers are down, and we’re sharing the ball well,” Fox said. “It’s really a good win for us, especially with Olivia (Hudson) out of the lineup. We’ll be even better when she gets back.”

Hudson missed the last three games with an injury, all Altoona wins.

“There’s been so much growth. The team is really maturing. We played them last time without Liv in the lineup, too. So it was the same team out there,” Colledge said. “We played a complete game. It was everybody collectively and not just a couple contributors. It’s so, so enjoyable to watch these girls play basketball the way it was meant to be played.”

Cherry, one of four sophomores in the six-player rotation, added nine points. She was able to successfully drive the lane and break down the CD defense throughout the game.

“We struggled keeping her in front of us. She had a couple layups and set up a couple other baskets. She had us scrambling,” Gambelunghe said. “You can see the varsity experience she’s getting really paying off.”
