B-A picks up top all-state basketball honors

Two PIAA Class 2A champion Bellwood-Antis High School girls basketball team members claimed top honors in the 2018 PA Sports Writers All-State Girls Basketball Team.

Sophomore Alli Campbell was selected as the Class 2A Player of the Year, and coach Jim Swaney earned the 2A Coach of the Year honor.

Others from the area being named first-team all-state included Bishop Carroll senior Alyssa Martinazzi, Juniata Valley sophomore Halee Smith and Philipsburg-Osceola junior Halle Herrington.

Campbell, who was recently voted the Mirror Player of the Year and the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year, averaged 26.4 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game while leading the Lady Blue Devils to a 28-3 record and a 45-42 victory over West Catholic in the PIAA title game. She scored 24 of her team’s 25 second-half points in the final.

Campbell was a second-team all-state pick as a freshman.

Swaney, in his eighth season at Bellwood, guided the Lady Devils to the top of the state despite losing Blair County’s all-time leading scorer Karson Swogger to graduation and overcoming a third-place finish in the District 6. He has a 185-32 record at Bellwood and has won 463 games overall in his coaching career.

Martinazzi was named to the Class 1A first team after helping the Lady Huskies reach the PIAA final four for the second straight season. She averaged 19.3 points per game this year after being an all-state second-team selection last season.

Smith was also named to the Class 1A first team after being a third-team pick last year. She averaged 16.3 points per game while helping Juniata Valley earn its first-ever District 6 championship and also helped the Lady Hornets reach the PIAA championship game for the season straight season.

Herrington led the area by averaging 30.6 points per game for the Lady Mounties. She was picked to the Class 3A first team. Herrington was a second-team selection last season.
