Richland moves to PIAA final
CHAMBERSBURG — Tyler Zimmerman buried a running 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Richland over Lancaster Mennonite, 54-52, in the PIAA Class 3A boys basketball semifinals on Saturday at Chambersburg Area High School.
Richland plays Neumann-Goretti in the title game in Hershey at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rams are the first boys basketball team from District 6 to play in a state final since Johnstown did it in 2005.
Valley to face Jenkintown
DOWNINGTOWN — Jenkintown got revenge on defending PIAA Class 1A girls basketball champion Lebanon Catholic on Saturday.
Jenkintown received 15 points from Mia Kolb and 14 apiece from Jennifer Kremp and Ashley Kremp in knocking off Lebanon Catholic, 50-46, in the state semifinals at Downingtown West High School.
Jenkintown, which lost to Lebanon Catholic in the state semis last season, will face District 6 champ and last year’s PIAA runner-up Juniata Valley in the final at noon Tuesday in Hershey.
Altoona loses two
RICHMOND,Va. — The Altoona Area High School baseball team went 0-2 on Saturday at a tournament in Virginia, losing 5-0 to Manchester and 5-4 to Benedictine.
In the opener, the Mountain Lions (0-3) got only three hits, singles from Owen Kravetz, Ian Yon and Cody Becker, in the loss to Manchester, which got a three-run homer from Connor Kannon.
In the nightcap, Matt Hartman had three hits and two RBIs for the Mountain Lions, who led 4-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Teammates Adam Sinisi and Jake Hunter each added solo RBIs. Tamari Bailor had three hits, including two doubles, for Benedictine.

Mountain Lions finish fifth
NORTH HUNTINGDON — The Altoona Area High School boys volleyball team finished Saturday afternoon in the middle of the pack at the Norwin Invitational after falling to Hempfield in the quarterfinals, 25-23.
The Mountain Lions finished the day with a 5-6 mark and took fifth place out of 15 schools.
After falling twice in morning pool play, Altoona bounced back with wins over Moon Township (25-15), Thomas Jefferson (25-16) and Peters Township (25-12) in the afternoon session before claiming a 25-21 win over Deer Lakes in the play-in round.
The Mountain Lions’ Phillip Swartz led the team in service points (24), kills (45) and digs (52) for the afternoon and also had nine blocks. Dalton Keller finished with 21 kills, 29 digs and six aces, while Chris Ball had 53 assists, Nick Snyder had 30 digs, and Ben Parrish had 20 blocks.
Altoona is back in action Monday night when it travels to Central to begin the dual meet season.
