BG girls play at AAHS; B-A heads to Forest Hills

The Bishop Guilfoyle High School girls basketball team won’t have to go very far to try to punch its ticket to the PIAA Class 2A semifinals.

The Lady Marauders on Friday morning learned that their quarterfinal round contest today with Laurel Highlands Conference and diocesan rival Bishop McCort will be played just a couple of miles from their school — at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Guilfoyle lost a regular-season game at McCort on Jan. 3, 56-53. The teams were in opposite sides of the bracket for the District 6 playoffs, but a meeting in the tournament championship was derailed when Bellwood-Antis defeated the Lady Marauders, 50-49, in the semis. McCort held off Bellwood in the finals, 60-58, while Guilfoyle bounced back to win the consolation game against Blairsville, 60-42.

Bellwood, meanwhile, will be looking for a rematch with the Guilfoyle/McCort winner. The Lady Devils first must take care of Our Lady of Sacred Heart of the WPIAL tonight. That game will be played at Forest Hills’ new gymnasium.

Three other teams from the Mirror coverage area will hit the court, too.

Bishop Carroll and Juniata Valley will endeavor to make it an all D6 semifinal in Class 1A girls when they play back-to-back in a doubleheader at DuBois’ Area High School’s Beaver Gymnasium.

Things will get started with the D6 runner-up Lady Hornets facing District 10 champion Kennedy Catholic at 5 p.m. The D6 champ Lady Huskies then play District 9 champ North Clarion at 6:30 p.m.

The only remaining area boys team on the scene is Central Cambria. The Red Devils, District 6 champs in 3A, will trek to Norwin High School in North Huntingdon to clash with WPIAL champ Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic at 1 p.m. — this is the first time Central Cambria has reached this stage of the postseason.
