Glendale boys advance
EBENSBURG – Glendale wiped out a seven-point deficit and eked out a 53-47 victory Monday night over Saltsburg in a District 6 Class A first-round playoff game at Central Cambria High School.
Sophomore Shea O’Donnell led the Vikings with 15 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. He hit 11-of-12 free throws. Anthony Barnhart added 13 points and Gary Witherow contributed 10 points.
Glendale will face top-seeded Bishop Carroll in a quarterfinal-round game at a site and time to be determined. Coach Ryan Pastva acknowledged his team will have to play its best game in order to knock off the Huskies.
“They’re definitely a good team. They go in there with the right for people to say they’re a good team,” Pastva said. “We have to go in with the mindset that we can do it. And every last guy in that locker room believes that we can do that.
“We believe if we can play solid the whole game, the full four quarters, we can shock some people because we’re better than what our record shows. “
Saltsburg coach Don Stitt Jr. acknowledged the tall order the Vikings face later this week, but added it is not impossible.
“Either if we would have won or if they’d have won, it’s going to be a tough test against Bishop Carroll,” he said. “[But] you never know; it’s a one-game situation. … I’ve been on teams that were No. 1 seeds, and Bishop Carroll’s a [number] 9 and they’d knock us off.”
For a time, however, it appeared as if the Trojans would be the team that would face the Huskies.
Saltsburg assumed a 36-29 lead entering the final period, only to watch the Vikings tie the score in the first two minutes of the quarter.
“On a couple of possessions I thought we got lazy on defense,” Stitt said.
Barhhart’s third 3-pointer of the night put Glendale in front 45-42, with 3:04 left. Saltsburg achieved another tie, 47-47, when Mitchell Yard hit two free throws with 1:06 left.
After a Vikings turnover in the frontcourt, the Trojans’ Ian Satler missed a layup, and O’Donnell scored on a put-back at the other end with 35 seconds left to put Glendale ahead for good, 49-47. O’Donnell and Barhnart then hit hot both ends of two free throws over the last 12 seconds to seal the victory.
The Trojans’ Steve Richards led all scorers with 19 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds. Satler added 10 points.
