Bishop Guilfoyle avenges loss to Bishop Carroll

EBENSBURG – Brandon Drenning and Damon Rickens combined for 26 points and Bishop Guilfoyle held off a late charge by Bishop Carroll as the Marauders came away with a 58-54 victory in a Laurel Highlands Conference basketball game Saturday night at Bishop Carroll High School.

The decision brought an end to Bishop Carroll’s 13-game wining streak.

“That is a very, very good basketball team. They are very well-coached,” Bishop Guilfoyle coach Chris Drenning said of the Huskies. “I think we had to play better than the last time (a 47-23 Bishop Carroll win on Jan. 7 at Altoona) or we’d have been run out of the gym because they can run you out of the gym.

“It’s such a nice win because they’re such a good opponent.”

Drenning scored 14 points, and Rickens added 12. The two combined for five of Bishop Guilfoyle’s seven 3-point field goals.

Bishop Guilfoyle also took advantage of early foul trouble by Marcus Lee. The Huskies’ pivot picked up his third personal foul just 2:48 into the game and did not return until the third quarter.

“Oh my word,” Bishop Carroll coach Cosie Aliquo said. “You take out one of your best players on any team; it’s going to affect you.”

Aliquo acknowledged that Lee has encountered foul trouble before.

“We’ve been lucky to get away with it. And tonight it caught up with us,” he said. “When he went out we lost our physical presence.”

“Marcus getting into foul trouble didn’t help them any,” Drenning said. “But I thought we executed better. We weren’t in such a rush; in the first game we played in such a hurry. We slowed down, took better shots and took better care of the ball.”

Bishop Guilfoyle took advantage of Lee’s absence and its edge in bench depth to take a 44-32 lead into the final period. Brandon Martinazzi’s 3-pointer with 1:08 to play, however, lifted Bishop Carroll to a 50-49 lead.

“I knew we would make a run,” Aliquo said. “How much of a run I didn’t know.”

Brandon Drenning answered with a 3-pointer with 48.8 seconds left to put the Marauders on top for good. He then hit two free throws, Sam McCloskey hit the front ends of two one-and-one opportunities, and Drenning hit two more free throws in the final minute to clinch the victory.

Martinazzi scored a game-high 24 points. He was the only Carroll player to score in double figures.
