BG, BC girls game takes backseat for cause

Saturday afternoon’s game between Bishop Carroll Catholic and the Lady Marauders of Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School was not a very competitive game, with the Lady Marauders crushing the Huskies, 67-24, in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Section 1 matchup at the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium.

Good thing the game itself was not the No. 1 priority of everyone in attendance.

Instead, the focus was on what was being celebrated – the third annual Lady Marauders Hoops for Hope.

Three years ago, when Bishop Guilfoyle teacher Doreen Fogle was diagnosed with cancer, the event was born. Sadly, Fogle lost her battle with cancer last May, but the Hoops for Hope event will go on annually.

Former Lady Marauder Chelsea Kerr organized the “Pink Out,” with almost every person in attendance wearing pink shirts, including the cheerleaders and Bishop Guilfoyle players.

Meanwhile, Bishop Carroll wore pink warmups, and pink prize baskets were given to those fans lucky enough to have their tickets drawn. The Bishop Guilfoyle coaching staff all wore pink shirts.

Bishop Guilfoyle coach Mark Moschella could not praise the efforts of Kerr and the event itself afterward.

“It was a great atmosphere,” Moschella said. “Like I said at halftime, Chelsea Kerr is the MVP today, and for her to put an event on like this today was just phenomenal for the community and the Fogle family.”

In the first quarter, the Lady Marauders only turned the ball over once and made their perimeter shots while racing out to a 19-8 lead.

Devin Stessney and Kayla Bates both hit long distance shots and Halee Adams made a jumper to spark the offense.

“We did a nice job of taking care of the ball and finding open shooters,” Moschella said.

The Lady Marauders did not allow the Huskies to score in the second quarter until there was 4:30 left on the clock.? That was when freshman Courtney Link made a trey.

Bishop Guilfoyle then scored the next six points, with Adams making a turnaround jumper, while Elyssa Ehredt followed with a jumper. Lexi Luciano finished off the run with a layup, allowing the Lady Marauders to take a 16-point halftime lead at 39-13.

Once again it was the defense of the Lady Marauders that kept the Huskies off the scoreboard, and this time it was for almost three minutes.

The Lady Marauders ended the third quarter by scoring the final eight points. Adams scored eight of her game-high 17 points. It was pretty much the same in the fourth quarter as well, as Bishop Guilfoyle outscored its foe, 18-5.

The Huskies did not have a single scorer reach double digits, with their high-scorer being Link with seven points.

“I thought our defense played better than the first time we played, but our offense was stagnant,” Bishop Carroll coach Crystal Horton said.

Bishop Guilfoyle still only has the one loss on the year at 17-1. The Lady Marauders will be back in action Monday night at Forest Hills.

The Huskies fell to 4-12 overall and will try and get back on track when they host Cambria Heights Monday.
