Appleman gets 400th win

WILLIAMSBURG – Williamsburg coach Don Appleman won his 400th game at his alma mater on senior night as the Lady Blue Pirates received 10 points from Alyssa Detwiler and eight more from senior Hailey McCall in a 48-15 win over Belleville Mennonite in high school girls basketball Friday.

“We’ve had a lot of great players here at Williamsburg,” Appleman said. “We had six outstanding seniors this year. We’ve had a lot of quality kids here over the years, and that’s what wins games for you, good players. Players win games and coaches lose them.”

Williamsburg high school principal Travis Lee, himself a three-sport athlete for the school, presented Appleman with the game ball. Appleman, who also won 73 games at Central before moving within the county, plans to have the seniors sign the ball.

“More than anything, it’s a great sports community,” Appleman said of Williamsburg. “Everybody really supports the teams with whatever sport it might be. I wouldn’t want to spend my career anywhere else but here.”
