OSU-PSU scoring summary

FIRST QUARTER

Penn State 3, Ohio State 0: Juwan Johnson made an incredible one-handed catch down the left sideline on PSU’s second series for a 31-yard gain down to the Ohio State 17. Johnson had dropped a third-down pass on the previous series but atoned for it. The Lions stalled at the 16, and Jake Pinegar kicked a 34-yard field goal with 4:58 left in the first. Pinegar missed a 46-yard field goal later in the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

Penn State 6, Ohio State 0: Dwayne Haskins threw high to Rashod Berry, who had the ball tip off his hands right to Garrett Taylor for an interception. Taylor took off and returned it 45 yards to the Ohio State 28. The Lions managed just 7 yards, and Pinegar kicked a 39-yard field goal with 11:18 to go in the half.

Penn State 13, Ohio State 0: On third-and-5 from their own 7, Trace McSorley hit KJ Hamler on a quick slant, and the speedy receiver turned on the jets for a 93-yard TD with 5:59 to go in the half. It was the second-longest play from scrimmage in PSU history.

Penn State 13, Ohio State 7: Miles Sanders made a huge mistake by fumbling deep in his own territory late in the first half, and Dre’Mont Jones recovered for Ohio State at the PSU 25. Two plays later, Dwayne Haskins hit J.K. Dobbins on a screen pass, and with blockers in front of him, he took it in from 26 yards with 1:50 to go in the half.

THIRD QUARTER

Ohio State 14, Penn State 13: After doing very little offensively in the first half, the Buckeyes got the ball to start the second half and went 75 yards in 13 plays for a go-ahead touchdown. Ohio State used a balanced mix of the ground game and air attack to move methodically downfield. It faced a crucial fourth-and-1 at the PSU and went for it, and Dobbins just barely picked up the first down on a close spot. Haskins hit back-to-back passes of 8 and 12 yards to set up first-and-goal at the 4, then Dobbins scored on the next play with 10:22 to go in the third.

FOURTH QUARTER

Penn State 20, Ohio State 14: McSorley converted a third-and-13 on a 36-yard pass to KJ Hamler, and the Lions got an additional 15 yards when OSU’s Jordan Fuller was flagged for targeting and was ejected. That moved PSU to the Buckeyes’ 15, and McSorley ran for 13 yards on the next play. McSorley then connected with tight end Pat Freiermuth on a 2-yard TD with 12:22 to play.

Penn State 26, Ohio State 14: PSU held the Buckeyes on fourth-and-1 at the Lions’ 48, with Koa Farmer stuff Haskins for no gain. McSorley then hit Mac Hippenhammer for a 21-yard gain to the Ohio State 31. McSorley then took off for a 19-yard keeper to convert on third-and-11, and he ran for 10 yards down to the 1. Sanders busted into the end zone on the next play with 8:00 remaining. The two-point conversion failed as Hippenhammer was stopped on the ground.

Penn State 26, Ohio State 21: The Buckeyes got an incredible individual effort from receiver Victor Binjimen on a 47-yard TD. Binjimen went up and caught a high pass from Haskins, then zigzagged his way through the defense to the end zone with 6:42 left.

Ohio State 27, Penn State 26: Haskins found K.J. Hill Jr. in the right flat, and he used his blocking to run 24 yards to the end zone for the eventual winning touchdown with 2:03 to go.
