Lady Lions lose at home in overtime

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end Thursday night, losing in the first round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, 63-62, to Radford at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Penn State, which led 54-52 with 4:11 to play in regulation, finished its season at 16-16. Radford, which moves on to the second round, improved to 24-8.

Penn State had trailed 52-48 before going on the run that gave it the two-point lead in the fourth. The Highlanders had their own run at 5-0 to go back up, 57-54, with under 2:30 minutes to play in regulation.

Teniya Page, who finished with 14 points for Penn State, got off the final shot for the Lady Lions. Penn State had the ball with 27 seconds left before Page put up a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left, but missed.

In overtime, neither the Lady Lions or the Highlanders scored in the first two minutes of the extra frame. Page hit two foul shots in the quarter to to tie the game up at 59-59.

Janayla White, who scored 12 points for Radford, hit a foul shot with 17.7 seconds left in overtime to put her team up, 63-62.

Page gave Penn State one last chance at a victory, but her shot at the buzzer from mid-range did not connect as the buzzer sounded.

The Lady Lions, who got 16 points from Amara Carter, trailed 17-15 after one quarter. Teammate Alisia Smith added 11 points in a game Penn State found itself down at halftime, 31-28.

The Lady Lions won the third quarter, 18-16, but still found themselves down, 47-46. An 11-10 showing in the fourth quarter sent the game into the extra frame.

Siyeh Frazier gave Penn State an early lead in the fourth when she turned a steal into a bucket for a 48-47 advantage.

Destinee Walker led the Highlanders with 13 points and eight rebounds. Jayda Worthy added 11 points while Khiana Johnson came off the bench to score 10 points.

Radford will play James Madison in the next round at a site and time to be determined this weekend. James Madison defeated East Tennesee State, 60-50, Thursday night.
