Penn State-Maryland scoring summary


Penn State 7, Maryland 0: The Lions started at their 9 on the game’s first possession and drove 91 yards for a TD. Trace McSorley did most of the work with some big passing gains and 22-yard scramble to the Maryland 33. Backup QB Tommy Stevens took a handoff, faked a reverse and took it 21 yards for a TD with 10:17 left in the first.

Penn State 14, Maryland 0: PSU started its next drive at the Terps’ 41 and quickly found the end zone, again with McSorley doing the work through the air, highlighted by a 16-yard pass to DeAndre Thompkins to the 5. McSorley scored on the next play, rolling over a defender at the goal line with 3:10 to go in the first.


Penn State 21, Maryland 0: The Terps went for it on fourth-and-1 at their own 44 and were stuff, so the Lions took over in great field position again. McSorley hit Saeed Blacknall for 19 yards to the 16, then Saquon Barkley carried twice for 14 yards. McSorley tossed a 2-yard shovel pass to tight end Mike Gesicki for a TD with 14:52 left in the half.

Penn State 28, Maryland 0: Tariq Castro-Fields forced a fumble, and Robert Windsor recovered for PSU at its own 48. McSorley found DaeSean Hamilton for 32 yards to the 19, and Gesicki made a great catch for a 9-yard TD with 11:31 to go in the half.

Penn State 31, Maryland 0: McSorley found Thompkins for a 28-yard gain on third-and-6 to move PSU to the Terps; 35. The Lions stalled at the 12, and Tyler Davis kicked a 30-yard field goal with 2:24 left in the half.


Penn State 38, Maryland 0: The Lions went 73 yards for a TD on their first possession of the second half. Saquon Barkley had a 17-yard run and Miles Sanders an 11-yarder in the drive, which ended when Barkley went over the top on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 9:18 left in the third.

Penn State 45, Maryland 0: Maryland fumbled the ensuing kickoff, with Zech McPhearson recovering for PSU at the Terps’ 13. Barkley scored from a yard out with 7:12 to go in the third.

Penn State 52, Maryland 0: Stevens took over at QB and led the Lions on a 68-yard TD drive, with Stevens having runs of 14, 12 and 9 yards on the march. He finished off the drive with a 4-yard TD pass to tight end Tom Pancoast with 2:37 left in the third.

Penn State 52, Maryland 3: The Terps ended PSU’s shutout bid with a 42-yard field goal by Henry Darmstadter with 1:10 to go in the third.


Penn State 59, Maryland 3: Stevens led another TD drive, one that included a 31-yard run by Miles Sanders to the Terps’ 7. Stevens scored from 3 yards out two plays later with 7:44 remaining.

Penn State 66, Maryland 3: Stevens ran it in again, this time from 6 yards, with 2:24 remaining to finish off the rout.
