Hawkeyes upset by state rival

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Cole Netten hit a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left and Iowa State rallied to beat Iowa 20-17 on Saturday, picking up its first win of the season.

Sam Richardson had 255 yards passing and 2 TDs for the Cyclones (1-2), who beat the rival Hawkeyes (2-1) for the third time in four tries.

Iowa State took a 17-14 lead with 7:33 left on Richardson’s 27-yard TD pass to DeVondrick Nealy. Iowa answered with Marshall Koehn’s 44-yard field goal with 4:08 to go.

Netten appeared to miss his first try at the game-winner, but Iowa had already called a timeout.

Netten’s second attempt went straight through the uprights.

Jake Rudock threw for 146 yards and an interception for Iowa, which was held to just three points after halftime.

Down 14-3 midway through the third quarter, Iowa State found itself in desperate need of a spark.

T.J. Mutcherson gave the Cyclones life with their first takeaway of the season, intercepting Rudock and returning it to the Iowa 32. Richardson then found E.J. Bibbs with a jump pass on 4th and inches to pull Iowa State to 14-10 with 6:50 left in the third quarter.

Indiana loses

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green’s James Knapke threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Roger Lewis with 9 seconds to play in the game as the Falcons knocked off Indiana, 45-42.

Knapke, a redshirt sophomore making his second career start, set school records for attempts (73) and completed passes (46) as he threw for 395 yards and three touchdowns.

Indiana had one final chance, but Bowling Green’s James Sanford knocked down Sudfeld’s pass inside the 5-yard line.

Gophers crushed

FORT WORTH, Texas – Receiver Josh Doctson caught two first-half touchdown receptions and TCU’s defense smothered Minnesota’s run-oriented attack for a 30-7 win.

TCU (2-0) forced five turnovers and held Minnesota (2-1) to 99 yards rushing – 134 below its average.

Doctson had a leaping grab with his right hand for a 7-yard score that increased TCU’s lead to 17-0 early in the second quarter.

Mitch Leidner, Minnesota’s starting quarterback, left the game early in the fourth quarter following a hard tackle. Leidner passed for 151 yards and three interceptions and also lost a fumble.

TCU held David Cobb to 41 yards on 15 carries. Cobb averaged 145.5 yards rushing in Minnesota’s previous two wins.

victories.

The Gophers’ lone score came on a 12-yard pass from freshman Chris Streveler to Maxx Williams with 10:56 to play.

Buckeyes roll

COLUMBUS, Ohio – J.T. Barrett matched a school record with six touchdown passes – five in the first half – to lead No. 22 Ohio State, rebounding from a loss to Virginia Tech, to a 66-0 victory over Kent State.

The win was the 39th in a row over an in-state opponent for the Buckeyes (2-1), who haven’t lost since a 7-6 setback to Oberlin in 1921.

Nick Holley had six receptions for Kent State (0-3), which got $850,000 to get pounded before a crowd of 104,404 at Ohio Stadium.

Wolverines triumph

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Derrick Green ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and Michigan overcame three first-half turnovers to beat Miami (Ohio) 34-10.

The Wolverines (2-1) held the RedHawks (0-3) to eight first downs, but it wasn’t a particularly impressive win against a Miami team that has lost 19 straight. Michigan was coming off a 31-0 loss to Notre Dame, and the Wolverines struggled to put this game away.

Standout wide receiver Devin Funchess, who appeared to hurt his leg against Notre Dame, did not suit up for Michigan. Devin Gardner went 13 of 20 for 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

It was tied at 10 in the second quarter when Michigan went on a six-play, 66-yard drive capped by Green’s 1-yard scoring run. Gardner’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Jake Butt made it 24-10 with 3:44 left in the third.

There were some empty seats in the northwest corner of Michigan Stadium, where students generally sit, but the announced crowd of 102,824 was enough to extend the team’s streak to 253 home games of at least 100,000. Those fans weren’t too pleased at the end of the first half, though.

Illini battered on the road

SEATTLE – Linebacker Shaq Thompson returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown, picked up a fumble and rumbled 52 yards for another score, and Washington routed Illinois, 44-19, improving to 3-0 under Chris Petersen.

Washington quarterback Cyler Miles threw a 75-yard touchdown to John Ross as part of a 21-point blitz that took less than six minutes of the first half. Dwayne Washington’s 12-yard TD run gave the Huskies a 28-3 lead on the first play of the second quarter.

Wes Lunt threw for 230 yards for the Fighting Illini (2-1), but was unable to take advantage of Washington’s depleted secondary. Illinois was trying for just the fifth 3-0 start in the past 25 years.
