Local rugby stars represent PA

Three players from Blair United/Hollidaysburg Rugby traveled to Rahway N.J. to play in the Northeast Regional Cup Tournament.

Ian DiPangrazio, Gus Dellinger and Sam Haines represented Pennsylvania in games against New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Washington DC teams.

On the varsity team, Dellinger and Haines played eight man and prop for Rugby PA. Dellinger scored a try in the first win against New Jersey. On Sunday, in a close match against New York, Haines had a significant run of 20 meters carrying four defenders which quickly resulted in a game winning try. The PA team placed second in the tournament.

Playing for the junior varsity team, incoming sophomore DiPangrazio played lock for Pennsylvania in its three close losses and finally a win on Sunday vs. the DC Elite team. DiPangrazio played significant minutes.

All three players are football players at Hollidaysburg Area High School; Dellinger and Haines also wrestle at that school.

Players were evaluated by USA Rugby representatives for the high school all American squad and also several college coaches. The All American squad represents the United States in international tournaments, as well as The Rugby World Cup for their ages.

PSU athletes in action

DES MOINES, Iowa – Day one of the USATF Championships featured three Nittany Lions advancing on in their respective events on Thursday at Drake Stadium.

The afternoon got started with Nittany Lion alumna Tori Gerlach of Reebok advancing to the final of the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her fifth-place finish in the second heat with a season-best time of 9:48.89. With her fifth-place finish in the second heat, Gerlach automatically qualified for the final on Saturday.

Junior Isaiah Harris won the first heat of the 800-meter run (1:48.71) to secure an automatic berth in the semifinal round tonight.

Sophomore Danae Rivers clocked in at a season-best time of 2:03.27 to automatically qualify for the semifinals of the 800-meter run today. Rivers went on to place third in the third heat to secure the automatic bid.
