Lineman changes his mind

A few weeks ago, it looked like Penn State would have trouble fitting a number of top prospects into its 2018 recruiting class because of a lack of scholarships.

That numbers bind is easing up.

The Nittany Lions are down to 20 recruits in this recruiting cycle today after Michigan offensive lineman Antwan Reed changed his mind and decommitted, going public on Twitter Thursday night.

Reed’s decommitment comes on the heels of the Lions withdrawing scholarship offers from defensive lineman Dorian Hardy and safety Isheem Young following highly-publicized off-the-field incidents involving the police.

Penn State’s class has been ranked among the top five nationally all season and still figures to finish strong with the Lions being at or near the top of the choices for blue-chip defensive linemen Micah Parsons, Tyreke Smith and Jayson Oweh, offensive tackle Rasheed Walker and wide receiver Solomon Enis.

Parsons, Smith and Walker all are scheduled to be in University Park this weekend for official visits along with 17 of the Lions’ verbally-committed recruits, Penn State’s biggest official visit weekend of the cycle.

Barkley honored

Junior running back Saquon Barkley became the 100th first-team All-American in Penn State history with his selection to the Walter Camp All-America first team Thursday night.

Barkley is the first Penn State offensive player to earn first-team Walter Camp All-America accolades since A.Q. Shipley in 2008.

Barkley has already collected several honors this season, winning the Paul Hornung Award for college football’s most versatile player and dominating the Big Ten major awards.

He was also a finalist for three other national awards — Maxwell Award, Doak Walker Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.
