PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Penn State women’s basketball team fought through a tough shooting afternoon and a pesky opponent to earn a 60-51 victory over Providence Saturday.
Penn State and Providence each worked through extended scoring droughts, including three each of 3-plus minutes. The Lady Lions ended up shooting 42 percent from the floor — bolstered by a 48 percent clip in the second half.
Penn State improved to 4-0 on the year, its best start since beginning the 2012-13 season 5-0.
Sophomore Amari Carter reached the 300-career point mark with a layup in the second quarter, ending the game with a career-high 23 points for the 12th double-figure scoring game and second 20-point effort of her career.
Siyeh Frazier (Detroit) reached double-figures for the fourth-straight game with 10 points, while the trio of Kamaria McDaniel, Jaida Travascio-Green and Jaylen Williams each chipped in six points.
Williams added a game- and career-high three assists, while De’Janae Boykin led the team with seven rebounds.
The turning point in the game came with 7:44 to go in the fourth quarter
After Providence knotted the game on a Jovana Nogic 3-pointer, 43-43, Sam Breen converted a layup to break the tie and McDaniel hit back-to-back 3-pointers to expand the lead to eight points.
The Lady Lions host Central Connecticut State on Monday.
