Coaches put PSU at No. 6

Penn State is ranked No. 6 in the preseason coaches poll, the highest preseason ranking for the program since it was No. 3 in 1999.

The Nittany Lions, coming off a Big Ten championship and 11-3 record, finished last season ranked 7th in the AP and coaches polls. This year, they trail only (1) Alabama, (2) Florida State, (3) Ohio State, (4) USC and (5) Clemson in the preseason coaches poll.

The Big Ten has one other team ranked in the top 10 (Wisconsin 9th), while Michigan (13th) is the conference’s other team in the top 25.

Penn State plays Ohio State and Michigan this season, and those three teams from the loaded Big Ten East are all in the top 13.

This is the first time PSU has been ranked in the preseason top 25 since 2011, when the Lions were No. 25 in the coaches poll.

The No. 6 ranking marks the first time since 2009 that Penn State is in the preseason top 10. The Lions were No. 8 in the coaches poll that year, coming off a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl appearance the previous season.
