Win puts Lions in title game
DETROIT — The Penn State men’s ice hockey team advanced to the finals of the Big Ten Tournament, thanks to a thrilling 4-3 double overtime win over Minnesota at the historic Joe Louis Arena.
It is the Nittany Lions’ first-ever trip to the Big Ten title game. The win also clinches a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Penn State will take on Wisconsin for the Big Ten title this evening. Wisconsin defeated Ohio State earlier Friday night.
Game time is set for 8 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
Minnesota was the No 1 seed in the tourney while Penn State entered play as the No. 4 seed.
The winning goal came courtesy of Erik Autio, who scored off an assist from Denis Smirnov. The goal came against Minnesota goalie Eric Schierhorn. The sophomore stopped 59 shots in the game, and has been named the conference’s goalie-of-the-year the past two seasons.
When it was all said and done, the two overtimes and the regulation periods lasted 93:33, which is the longest game in Big Ten history.
Goalie Peyton Jones was also strong in net for the Nittany Lions. He finished the night with 39 saves in the game.
Penn State grabbed the first lead of the night, going up 1-0 on a goal by Nikita Pavlychev. The freshman scored 1:05 into the game.
