McCort falls short

UNIVERSITY PARK – Ethan Pritchett pitched a complete-game three-hitter to lift Neumann-Goretti to a 3-0 victory over Bishop McCort in the PIAA Class AA baseball championship game on Thursday at Medlar Park at Lubrano Field.

The Crimson Crushers got two runners on it both the second and third innings and loaded the bases in the fourth but were unable to score.

Ian Fleck had two hits for McCort, while Boston Bradley reached on an infield single. Crusher pitchers Billy Wilson and Nick Beblar only allowed five hits in the defeat.

In the Class AAAA final, Boyertown scored twice in the top of the seventh to put away Plum, 4-1. The other two games – Bellefonte vs. Susquehanna Township in Class AAA and Meyersdale vs. Vincention in Class A – were postponed to today.

In softball at Beard Field, Holy Redeemer defeated District 9 champ Moniteau in the Class AA final. Other state champions crowned were Williams Valley (Class A) and Yough (Class AAA).

Altoona Teener

Nathan Criswell had two hits and drove in two runs to lead Eldorado Kiwanis to an 8-4 win over Cumming Motors in an Altoona Teener League 13-year-old played late Wednesday night at Seitz Field.

Sam Carmel got the win in relief. He struck out three. Ethan Lieb had two hits for Cumming Motors.

Haley signs with Rays

UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State baseball junior third baseman Jim Haley signed with the Tampa Bay Rays earlier this week.

He will be assigned to the organization’s Class-A Short Season affiliate, the Hudson Valley Renegades.

The Rays selected Haley in the 19th round of the 2016 MLB Draft with the 570th overall pick. The Renegades play in Wappingers Falls, New York, approximately 80 miles north of New York City.

After being drafted by the Seattle Mariners, Penn State teammate Jack Anderson signed with the organization and will be assigned to its Class-A Short Season affiliate in the Northwest League, the Everett Aquasox.

Anderson was selected by the Mariners in the 23rd round with the 687th pick.
