Lions’ Brown earns scholarships

UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State Nittany Lion wrestler Matt Brown has added two more honors to his lengthy list of accolades. The Utah native was awarded an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship as well as a Big Ten Post-Graduate Scholarship.

The NCAA award carries a $7,500 scholarship for post-graduate study at the university or professional school of the student-athlete’s choice. As for the Big Ten honor, one male and one female student-athlete from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program are awarded a $7,500 scholarship, primarily based on academic achievements.

Elsewhere:

n The Saint Francis softball team had three players honored by College Sports Madness as members of the organization’s All-NEC teams. Center fielder Taylor Parsons and first baseman Alexis Bower were named to the first team, and pitcher Blaire Lauthers was named to the second team. Parsons also was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Great Lakes All-Region Third Team.

n The Saint Francis women’s golf team announced the addition of three student-athletes to its roster for the 2015-16 season. The new golfers are Penn Cambria High School’s Madison Krug, Kelsey Patterson of Allentown Emmaus and Samantha Weber of Colorado Springs, Colo., Air Academy.

n Mount Aloysius softball players Alexandria Teeter and Sarah Forbes were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar-Athletes on Tuesday for their prowess on and off the diamond for the Mounties.

n The Penn State men’s hockey season ticket fan base is ready for next season. Ninety-five percent of current season ticket holders renewed for the upcoming 2015-16 season in Hockey Valley, while the remaining tickets were snatched up by existing season ticket holders and those at the top of the waiting list.

n Senior Penn State track and field student-athletes Sancho Barrett and Darrell Hill have both garnered Big Ten Athlete of Week Honors, as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon. Barrett picked up the Big Ten Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honor, while Hill was tabbed as the Big Ten Men’s Co-Field Athlete of the Week.

n The Saint Francis University student-athletes put together another semester with a GPA over the 3.0 mark for the 33rd consecutive time, a span that now has run 16-and-a-half years.

n The Landmark Conference has named 61 student-athletes to the Spring All-Sportsmanship Team. Juniata had six members of its spring sports teams represented. They are softball senior Katie Schroeder, baseball junior Anthony Lombardo of Altoona, men’s tennis senior Sam Brumbaugh, women’s tennis junior Mitsuki Koh, men’s track and field sophomore Andrew Paterno and women’s track and field senior Kylie Bererra of Juniata Valley.

n Penn State softball junior outfielder Lexi Knief gained NFCA All-Region honors as she was named to the third team for the All-Great Lakes Region.
