Recruit changes his mind

Penn State’s roll in football recruiting circles hit its first real snag on Friday when Indiana four-star linebacker Josh Barajas decommitted from the Nittany Lions.

Barajas subsequently committed to Notre Dame, which was considered his favorite before he verballed to Penn State in March.

Linebacker was considered a key position in the Lions’ 2015 recruiting class, with Penn State expected to take at least one more player there even with Barajas and Archbishop Wood’s Jake Cooper in the fold. One of the players with whom Penn State was involved but reportedly cooled after Barajas made his initial pledge was Indiana’s Darrin Kirkland; Kirkland committed to Michigan two weeks ago.

Penn State has been linked to New Jersey’s Manny Bowen and Ohio’s Jerome Baker, but Barajas’ place in the Lions’ class wasn’t likely to affect them – Barajas is viewed as a strongside prospect while Baker and Bowen are more likely to line up away from the tight end.

Without Barajas, Penn State has 15 verbal commitments so far in this class.
