Penn State 2014 football slate officially released

Penn State has a bye week before playing both Michigan and Ohio State in 2014, but the home non-conference schedule as it stands now lacks a high-profile opponent.

The Nittany Lions’ home non-conference opponents this year are Temple, Akron and UMass, which could make for a tough sell for a university trying to convince fans to buy season tickets.

The Big Ten home slate does include a visit by Ohio State, along with Northwestern, Maryland and Michigan State.

The Nittany Lions will play Rutgers in a Big Ten road game in week three next season, then after hosting UMass, they will host Northwestern. They’ll have a week off before traveling to Michigan, then another week off before hosting Ohio State.

Maryland will make its first trip to Beaver Stadium as a member of the Big Ten on Nov. 1 next year. The Lions will close the season at home against Michigan State on Nov. 29 in a renewal of the Land Grant Trophy game.

Penn State still has one more non-conference game to be scheduled in 2014, and it’s expected to be either a trip to Ireland or potentially to a warm-weather location that will serve as a reward for the players, since they can’t go to a bowl game. However, it is possible the remaining game could be scheduled at home against a major opponent.
