Pens win it in third period

PITTSBURGH — For two periods in Pittsburgh, the Detroit Red Wings hung with the Pittsburgh Penguins. They couldn’t keep it up in the third, however, as the Penguins won, 4-2, on Wednesday night.

Pittsburgh’s Brandon Tanev opend the scoring just over three minutes into the first period, and Detroit’s Ryan Kuffner answered with a goal about 10 minutes later.

The Penguins (2-1-2) took the lead back less than a minute into the second with a goal from Bryan Rust, but Mike Green evened it for the Wings with 2:37 remaining in the period.

But the Wings (2-2-2) had no answer for the Pens in the third, as Dominik Simon scored 1:56 into the period and

added an insurance goal with just under four minutes remaining.

Pittsburgh will host the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday at 4 p.m. in its final exhibition game of the preseason.
