SFU tournament will welcome 29 scholastic teams

LORETTO — Saint Francis University will host the 19th annual Saint Francis University High School Volleyball Invitational on Saturday at the DeGol Arena. Pool play begins at 8:30 a.m.

Twenty-nine teams will comprise one of the largest single-day volleyball tournaments in the state.

The tournament is the creation of Chuck Gojmerac, volleyball official and director at Morrisons Cove Memorial Park.

“Twenty years ago, I saw a need for an event to showcase some of the best high school volleyball talent in Central Pennsylvania” Gojmerac said. “The staff and administration at Saint Francis have been instrumental in making the event what it is today. It is very hard pressed to find another facility to host 6 courts of play under one roof. The feedback received from teams who participated in the past is nothing short of fantastic. The DeGol Arena is one of the finest facilities anywhere,” he said.

Teams competing this season include: Bishop McCort, Blairsville, Cambria Heights, Central, Central Cambria, Chestnut Ridge, Conemaugh Township, Forest Hills, Johnstown, Hollidaysburg, Homer-Center, Huntingdon, Juniata, Juniata Valley, Meyersdale, Mount Union, Northern Bedford, Penn Cambria, Penns Valley, Philipsburg-Osceola, Portage, Punxsutawney, Purchase Line, Richland, St. Joseph’s, Sugar Valley, United, West Shamokin, Westmont Hilltop.

“The tournament format is set up with five pools of five teams each and one pool of four teams. All teams will advance, after pool play, to either the gold, silver or bronze division play-offs. A nice feature of this tournament, which you do not usually see anywhere else, is the fact that all participants advance to a playoff, single elimination round, in which schools are competing against schools of a similar competition level,” Gojmerac said.

Teams representing the Laurel Highlands Conference, Mountain League, WestPAC, Heritage Conference, Inter County Conference and Districts IV and IX will all be in attendance Saturday.
