DeGol, Day find themselves at the top again
From Mirror reports
CRESSON — There was only one feeling on the mind of Anthony DeGol Sunday afternoon.
“I definitely felt a sense of relief after that 18-inch par putt dropped on the last hole,” DeGol said after clinching the men’s individual title at the 2019 Greater Altoona Golf Tournament at the Summit Country Club.
DeGol shot a second-round score of 2-under par, 70, to finish one shot ahead of first-round leader Steve DeStefano. Coming into the final round, DeGol trailed by three shots but started off with a good break on the first hole.
“I pulled my second shot, and it was heading into the woods,” DeGol said. “But it hit a tree and came back into play. From there, I was fortunate to get up and down for a birdie.”
DeGol played solid golf from thereafter and eventually drew even with DeStefano with a birdie on No. 10. After a great drive on No. 16, DeGol hit his 100-yard approach shot to within birdie range and took the lead for good.
“I had a good chance at birdie on 17, but my putt slid by the hole,” DeStefano said. “Anthony is a fantastic player. He’s a great ball-striker and he really knows how to ‘grind out’ a round. I’m really happy for him.”
This year’s victory marks the third Greater Altoona title in a row for DeGol. His three individual wins now rank second only to Artie Fink Jr.’s total of eight.
“Winning this is a big accomplishment,” DeGol said. “There are a lot of really accomplished players in our area, and I’m just happy to be able to come out on top.”
On the women’s side, Michelle Day was able to hold on to her first-round lead and capture her eighth consecutive Greater Altoona title. Day cruised to a victory on Sunday with a score of 80 that left her 17 shots clear of second place.
“I played pretty solid today,” Day said. “With the exception of a water ball on 15, which led to a double-bogey, the rest of the round was pretty good.”
Day credits her good play this summer with joining the Women’s Golf Association of Western Pennsylvania.
“I committed to playing competitive golf this summer, and by joining the Association, I’ve been able to play a lot of great tournaments at some really fantastic golf courses,” she said. “But I really enjoyed winning here, especially with the great group of ladies we have at Scotch Valley.”
The Scotch Valley women’s team, consisting of Day, Chris Sisto, Penny Orr and Carol Onufro, captured the team competition, marking their fifth consecutive title.
On the men’s side, the Summit team of DeStefano, Quintin Dziabo, Cody Trabert and Mitch Johns took home this year’s team trophy after a three-shot victory over the Scotch Valley men. The victory was only the second team title for the Summit Country Club in Greater Altoona history, the last coming 39 years ago when Jack Calandra, John Dziabo, Leon Madey and Ron Muffie were victorious.
