All-Star game at Lakemont

A team of all-stars from the Central Blair Recreation Commission’s Lakemont Park Summer Basketball League will match up with a visiting all-star team from the Clearfield area on Saturday at Lakemont.

Tipoff is 2:30 p.m.

The local team includes Nathan Davis, a former Bellwood-Antis High School standout entering his senior year at Seton Hill University, ex-Cambria Heights and UPJ products Ben Vescovi and Isaac Vescovi, State College’s Drew Friberg, who is headed to play at Princeton, former Sacred Heart player Drew Shubik, Altoona standouts Jesse Betar and Manny Span, who played at Bloomsburg and Shippensburg, respectively, and Jacob Fleegle, who played at Waynesburg.

Willie Morse of State College will coach the Lakemont team.

Player-coach Al Varacello is heading up the Clearfield squad, which includes Jake Perrin, Sam Roselli and Brice Bright — all of Penn State DuBois — Austin Krise (West Branch/PSU Altoona), Nate Schneider (PSU Behrend), Kyle Braun (St. Vincent) and former Pitt player Carl Krauser.

“They’re calling themselves the Clearfield County all-stars,” Lakemont league director Skip Dry said.

Dry said it’s the first such all-star game he recalls involving local summer league players.

“We tried to put together a game out at Mansion years ago, but we were NCAA sanctioned at the time, and they didn’t allow us,” he said. “After we dropped the sanction, nobody ever contacted us. Al heard about our league and the facilities and wanted to bring a team down. The players from here are all good players who will represent the CBRC and the Lakemont Summer Basketball League well.”

SFU women defeated

SYDNEY, Australia — Saint Francis women’s basketball team played the final game of its Australia foreign tour on Thursday. The Red Flash had a well-balanced team effort, but were unable to overcome a second half surge by the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence in a 78-59 defeat.

Phee Allen led SFU in scoring with nine points, while MaKenzie Pollard added eight points. Karson Swogger scored seven points for the Red Flash.

The team arrived in Sydney on Wednesday morning after a short flight from Melbourne. Saint Francis then had the afternoon to explore world famous Bondi Beach and walk along the rocks surrounding the ocean. The squad had free time to explore downtown Sydney before enjoying dinner at a waterfront restaurant along the Sydney Harbour.

On Thursday morning, the team went on a tour of the historic Sydney Opera House. The Red Flash also could view the Harbour Bridge from a distance, which is what SFU will be climbing on Friday. The bridge is 440 feet over the Harbour and will take approximately three hours to climb.
