Fed’s Shirley’s Cookies, Martin Oil force Game 3

Shirley’s Cookies pulled even with Barton’s Plumbing & Heating in their George B. Kelley Federation quarterfinal playoff series with an 8-3 win at Vets Field on Monday night.

With the score tied 3-3, Shirley’s scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away.

Zach McCarty threw a five-hitter to earn the win and also collected two hits, as did Hunter Emerick.

Ben Dombrosky had two hits and two RBIs for Barton’s Plumbing.

The third and deciding game will be held at Vets Field today at 5:30.

Martin Oil forced a third and deciding game in its quarterfinal playoff series with Sheetz by earning a victory at Vets Field.

Game 3 is scheduled for tonight at Vets Field.

Troy Walker keyed the Martin Oil offense by going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBIs, and Joe Dorminy drove in three runs. Mark Stewart went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.

Blake Johnston earned the win with five strikeouts.

Area 4 VFW

MARTINSBURG — Spring Cove won the Area 4 VFW 13-14 championship with an 11-10 victory over Altoona.

Spring Cove, which won the best-of-three series, 2-1, will now participate in the VFW State Tournament beginning Friday in Hollidaysburg. Spring Cove won the title last year.

Zach Oakes contributed three hits, including an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. Luke Bettwy went 6ª innings to earn the win, and Nick Wiedemer got the last out to earn the save.

Michael Riccio led Altoona with three hits and four RBIs.

DP Little World Series on tap

The 27th annual Dean Patterson Little World Series, with a record 25 teams, is scheduled to begin Saturday with all games at Altoona Independent Youth Baseball League’s Centennial Field near Mansion Park.

The single-elimination tournament will run all next week with the semifinals set for Thursday, July 25, the home run derby and base-running contest on Friday, July 26, and the consolation and championship games set for 6 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 27.

The tournament will include teams from leagues in Altoona, Bellwood, Williamsburg, Claysburg, Portage, Cresson and Hastings.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. The bracket will be determined by a drawing on Wednesday night.
