Altoona wins first game in Babe Ruth Regional

Altoona passed its first test in the Babe Ruth Mid-Atlantic Regional 13U Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Altoona edged Mifflin County, 10-7, at PNG Field with a big seventh inning.

With the scored tied 7-7 in the seventh, Altoona’s Gabe Harshbarger singled in Matt Smith, Connor Lindsey doubled in Harshbarger, and Tysen LaRocco doubled in Lindsey.

Lindsey and LaRocco each had two hits for Altoona, and Payton Hartman drove in two runs.

Landen Eichhorn and Trevor Sheaffer each had three hits for Mifflin County, which fell to 1-1.

Altoona will now play 0-1 Valley Babe Ruth from Western New York at 8 p.m. tonight at Seitz Field in pool play.

VFW 16U Regional

Sheetz Altoona advanced to the VFW 16U Regional Tournament finals with a 17-0 win over Bellwood at Mansion Park on Saturday.

Tyreke Green, Kyle Wilson and Dylan McNelly each had two hits and two RBIs for Altoona, Marcus Day and Drew Hileman each drove in two runs, and Josh Bardelang and Sam Carmel combined on a two-hitter.

On Monday, Sheetz Altoona will play the winner of tonight’s game between Hollidaysburg and Bellwood. The regional champion and runner-up will both earn a berth in next weekend’s VFW 16u state championship tournament in Clearfield.

VFW 13-14 states

HOLLIDAYSBURG — After dropping its opener to Punxsutawney on Friday, Spring Cove earned two wins on Saturday in the VFW 13-14 State Tournament.

At Longer Elementary, Spring Cove beat State College, 20-4, in four innings. Rylan Daugherty drove in three runs and scored three times, and Luke Bettwy earned the win, allowing just three hits.

In the second game, at Hollidaysburg Area High School, Spring Cove eliminated host Hollidaysburg from the double-elimination tournament with an 11-7 victory. Kaleb Mountain tossed a complete game.

Spring Cove will play Mid-Penn at 10 a.m. today.

Region 7 Legion

LATROBE — Latrobe and Bedford were locked in a pitcher’s duel before Latrobe was able to break through in the top of the sixth inning with three runs to hand Bedford its first loss of the Region 7 Legion tournament, 3-0.

Bedford’s Trenten Mellott surrendered just five hits, struck out four, walked one and retired 21 of the batters he faced.

Drew Hall and Nathaniel Semanek delivered two hits apiece as Bedford recorded nine total as a team.

Bedford will face Mifflin County at 2 p.m. today.

Junior Legion Regional

OLEY — Spring Cove Junior Legion defeated Oley, 16-0, in the first round of Junior Legion Regionals on Saturday.

Tyler Helsel through a complete-game shutout. Devon Boyles, Tyler Helsel, Jonah Snowberger and Lambert Palmer each had two hits.

Spring Cove advanced to play Norchester at 4 p.m. today.

Greater City League

Sean Steffy had two hits and four RBIs to lead Blair County Oil over BMG Construction, 12-1, in the Altoona Greater City Baseball League at Mansion Park Friday night.

Ben Foose and Mark Saxman each drove in two runs.
