Perry will hit on big stage
NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio — Hollidaysburg 14-year-old Landon Perry will be getting a Major League Baseball All-Star experience next month.
Perry won a regional tournament in the MLB Junior Home Run Derby competition on Sunday near Cleveland and will now be one of 10 competing in the finals of the 14-and-under competition — at the Cleveland Indians’ Progressive Field on Saturday morning July 6.
The event will be part of the All-Star weekend in Cleveland, which will conclude with the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 9.
“I’m excited,” Perry said. “But I’m also worried about possibly going against guys bigger than me.”
Perry won the local competition in Pittsburgh two weeks ago to earn the trip to Sunday’s regional competition, which is one of 10 in the nation. Perry hit 11 home runs in the first round to advance with three others to the finals, where he hit 13 to win the regional.
“My mind was everywhere,” Perry said. “I didn’t know if I had won, and then (an official) said I did. I was excitied.”
Perry played first base for the Hollidaysburg Area Junior High School team and will be entering ninth grade this fall.
