Altoona Area High School fills out rest of football staff
New Altoona boys basketball coach Jarrod Klausman met with Mountain Lions football coach Vince Nedimyer Jr. when he found out he was getting the job to map out the summer training schedule for both teams.
It’s important to both coaches that athletes don’t feel conflicted or have to choose between one sport and the other.
“With football and basketball, you’re going to have a lot of the same kids playing both sports,” Klausman said. “We sat down and collaborated our schedules so we don’t have kids that play both having to decide. I made my whole schedule for the summer based off what (Nedimyer Jr.) was doing. We want to share kids and make sure kids are playing as many sports as possible.”
Nedimyer Jr. now has an official staff to help with those summer assignments.
Mike Adams, Phil Riccio, Josh Buchanan, Andy Aiken, Doug Rosenberry and Paul Picciotti were approved by the Altoona Area School Board Thursday as assistant football coaches along with a coach to be announced at salaries of $4,000 for the 2019-2020 school year.
Riccio, Altoona’s current athletic director, was the Mountain Lions’ head football coach from 1999-2008 and went 71-45.
Ron Bowser was also approved as an assistant golf coach at $1,500, and head girls volleyball coach John Saboe will make $5,000 next year. Board member Ed Kreuz specifically opposed the hiring of Saboe.
Board member Ron Johnston took a more broad approach, saying he supported the people hired but not the salaries they are set to make.
“We’re spending a lot of money. It’s gotten a little out of control,” Johnston said. “It’s time to pull in the reins a little bit.”
Other coaching positions that were approved for the 2019-2020 school year that will be filled by people still to be announced include: assistant swimming coach ($2,200), assistant wrestling coach ($4,000), assistant girls basketball coach ($4,000) and assistant girls volleyball coach ($2,200). The assistant golf and assistant swimming coaching positions are new positions.
