Saint Francis drops opener on road

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Saint Francis softball team lost its opener in the Ann Arbor Regional of the NCAA Softball Tournament Friday night, losing 8-0 to the host Wolverines in first-round action.

The Red Flash (29-30) — the Northeast Conference champion — will play DePaul today in the losers’ bracket and a loss will end their season. A win allows Saint Francis another game, against the loser of Michigan-James Madison, following the completion of the DePaul game.

Meghan Beaubien pitched five shutout innings for Michign. She struck out six and did not walk a batter as the team improved to 44-11. She gave up two hits.

Losing pitcher Mikayla Bower was charged with two earned runs in three innings while reliever Christina Clark gave up four earned runs in two-plus innings of work.

Mackenzie Nemitz had two hits and two RBIs to lead Michigan, which led, 4-0, after three innings.

The Red Flash got solo hits from Mekenzie Saban, Cheyenne McKee and Hayley Norton.
