Bisons capture District 5 boys title

LOYSBURG — Bedford senior Wes Lippincott had a nasty cut on his eye and an even worse bruise on his shoulder, but the gold medal around his neck and the team District 5 track and field title in his arms certainly helped ease the pain.

Lippincott’s effort in the 200-meter dash left him face down on the track. He crossed the finish line after edging Tussey Mountain’s Tyler Rhodes by the slimmest of margins, 23.69 seconds to 23.71 seconds, to win the title.

“I leaned really hard, and I was too tired to get my legs back beneath me,” Lippincott said. “I wasn’t even sure I won, but I didn’t even feel the pain until about 15 minutes later.”

Lippincott didn’t let the fall end his day as he anchored the Bisons 1,600-meter relay team to a victory that put the finishing touches on a team title, 99-84, over runner-up Northern Bedford.

“I tried not to think about the pain,” Lippincott said. “All my teammates ran well, and it turned out in our favor.

“We all put in a lot of hard work. It feels good for it all to pay off.”

Bedford also got event victories from Elijah Cook (javelin), Van May (3,200-meter run) and its 400-meter relay team, of which Lippincott was also a member, at the District 5 track and field championships Wednesday.

Though it was the Bisons who took home the team hardware, it was a pair of Chestnut Ridge Lions who made the biggest mark on the meet.

Logan Pfister came into Wednesday as the top seed in the long, triple and high jump and won all three events. He also set a meet record in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 6.5 inches.

“I know I was ranked pretty high coming in, but I still had to compete,” Pfister said. “There are some really good competitors out here. I feel like I came out and brought it and had a really good day.”

Pfister’s teammate, Duane Knisely, only won two events, but he took home a pair of meet records in both the shot put and discus.

Knisely medaled in the discus at last year’s PIAA meet, finishing fifth, and took 13th in the shot put.

“I could have done a little better,” said Knisely, who threw the shot put 53 feet, 5.25 inches and the discus 170 feet, 4 inches. “I hit some goals with the records, and they were the main goal this meet, and I should be going into states pretty decently. I just hope I’m ready to perform better next week. I have to stay loose and not let the pressure get to me.”

Knisely is hoping last year’s experience helps him this time around.

“The pressure was pretty heavy on my shoulders last year,” Knisely said. “I’m pretty sure that will be different this year.”

Everett’s Nathaniel Maxwell won both the 400-meter dash and 800-meter runs by significant margins.

“These are both my best times for running the events so close to each other,” Maxwell said. “I was definitely happy with that. We have great competitors here who push each other, and it’s all good, friendly competition, so that really helps.”

Ian Zimmerman of Northern Bedford also had a good day as part of the 3,200-meter relay team that won a title before winning the mile race.

“I’m really happy about our relay, because I didn’t know if we’d have a competitive chance this year,” Zimmerman said. “To come out and win was really fun and awesome. I wanted to PR in the mile, but my legs were beat up after the (relay), so I figured just try to win.”

Tussey Mountain also had a pair of champions in 100-meter dash winner Jarred Sipes and pole vault champion David Smith.
