Altoona’s Folcarelli wins Pan-Ram javelin

HARRISBURG — Altoona Area High School senior Michael Folcarelli won the javelin event at the 31st New Balance Pan-Ram Track and Field Invitational on Saturday.

Folcarelli threw the javelin 178 feet, 6 inches to best a field of 36 competitors at Central Dauphin High School’s Landis Field.

Altoona’s Connor Adams was second in the long jump (20-11.5) and joined Isaiah Barnes, Kurt VonColln and Mitchell Lawhead to finish fourth in the 400-meter relay (43.49). Also finishing second was Chadric Flarend in the pole vault (12-6).

In addition, Tyson Carter was third in the long jump (20-9), Barnes was fifth in the 110 hurdles (15.44), Lyric Koelle was fifth in the pole vault (11-6), Lawhead was sixth in the 200 dash (23.10), and the Altoona 1600 relay team was seventh (3:34.27).

On the girls side, Altoona junior Gianna Caputo was third in the triple jump (34-8.75), fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.97) and eighth in the long jump (15-1.25).

Rachel Krier and MacKenzie Kelley tied for sixth in the pole vault (9-0), Lindsay Whysong was sixth in the shot put (30-4), Harley Price was seventh in the discus (94-3), Maggie Fox was eighth in the 300 hurdles (49.71), and Brooke Long was eighth in the 100 dash (13.11).

PSU honors wrestlers

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team handed out more than 10 postseason awards at its annual post-season banquet on Sunday. The event was held at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center.

The Carl Winterburn Award for Manager of the Year honor was given to Janna Wood, daughter of Jen and John Wood. Senior Francisco Bisono was honored with the Community Service Award.

Five Academic Awards are given out. True freshman Austin Hoopes won the First Year Academic Award with a 3.94 grade point average. Redshirt freshman Austin Clabaugh was honored with the Second Year award with a 3.98 GPA. Sophomore Brian Friery earned the Third Year award with a 3.98 GPA. Junior Dominic Giannangeli won the Fourth Year Academic Award with a 3.77 GPA. Senior Jason Nolf won the Fifth Year honor with a 3.72 GPA.

Nolf also was honored with the Most Takedowns Award with 141 and the Most Team Points Award with 172.5. Senior Bo Nickal won the Most Falls Award with 18 and the Most Bonus Points Award with 55.5.

Stroh gets personal best

LEWISBURG – Shippensburg University track and field senior Dominic Stroh (Altoona) achieved a new personal best at 1,500 meters, breaking 3:50 for the first time in his career by running an NCAA-provisional qualifier of 3:49.73 at Bucknell’s Bison Outdoor Classic. Stroh’s new PR is one second faster than his previous best, achieved two years ago at the Bison Classic.
