IUP captures opener
GLENVILLE, WV — The IUP women’s basketball team opened up play in an NCAA Division II playoffs on Friday with a 67-60 win over Bowie State in the Atlantic Regional round 1 game at the Waco Center.
IUP (27-3) will play Virginia Union today at 5 p.m. in the second round.
On Friday, the Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 15-9 first-quarter lead before Bowie got back into it with a 23-18 showing in the second quarter. Still, IUP led, 33-32 at the break.
Carolyn Appleby was one of five starters in double figures for IUP. She finished with 19 points while teammates Lauren Wolosik and Brittany Robinson each added 13 points. Robinson also had a big game on the boards, finishing with 12.
Guards Lexi Griggs and Natalie Myers each added 11 points.
Bowie State, which was outscored, 20-15, in the decisive final frame, got 17 points from Pere Alexander to go with 14 points and eight rebounds from Talanya Hutton.
Virginia Union comes into today’s game off a win over Edinboro in another Atlantic Regional round 1 game. The Lady Panthers are 28-2.
