Archer struggles for Bucs

LAKELAND, Fla. — Starter Chris Archer gave up four runs — three earned — over three innings Saturday afternoon as the Pirates lost on the road against the Detroit Tigers, 6-3, in Grapefruit League action.

Archer allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one. He gave up one run in the first inning and three in the second.

Archer has 3.38 ERA so far this spring and had thrown five straight scoreless innings coming into the game.

Bryan Reynolds had a two-run single in the fifth inning for the Pirates, who had only four hits.

Will Craig walked three times for the Bucs, while Kevin Newman was 1-for-3 and is batting .276 as he battles for the shortstop job.

The Tigers’ lineup featured a heavy dose of former Pirates. Catcher Chris Stewart homered in the fifth inning for Detroit. Second baseman Josh Harrison led off and went 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Shortstop Jordy Mercer batted second and was 0-for-2 with a walk.

The Pirates are 8-12-2 this spring.
