Ridge places third
HERSHEY — Chestnut Ridge coach Greg Lazor wasn’t exactly sure how his young team would respond before making the trip to the Giant Center for the PIAA Class 2A Duals.
The Lions, though, responded very well, finishing in third place for the second year in a row.
After losing to Southern Columbia by three points on Friday night in the semifinals, Ridge beat Burrell, 32-29, in the consolation semifinals and Brookville, 46-18, in the consolation finals.
“It feels great,” Ridge coach Greg Lazor said. “We came down to the tournament not sure with what we have. I thought we had a chance to place, and the boys wrestled their tails off. They did the best they could do. They not only got a medal, but they got a third convincingly. I’m extremely proud of the boys.”
The Lions finished the dual meet season with a 16-1 record.
In the third-place match, the Lions recorded six falls. Jared McGill started it with a pin in 2:12 at 170, and Duane Knisely (220), Ross Dull (120), Gryphon Callihan (126), Trevor Weyandt (132) and Baltzer Bollman (145) followed with falls.
It was the first time that Chestnut Ridge had ever beaten Brookville (20-4).
“We did awesome, obviously,” Lazor said. “The boys got some wins against some tough kids, and they took care of some wins that they should have done. Brookville is a team we’ve never beaten in I don’t know how many years we’ve wrestled them in the Ultimate Duals. It’s a nice way to end the dual meet season.”
Weyandt’s pin of Cabe Park in 4:49 not only sealed the dual meet win for Ridge, but it also came when he was losing, 10-4. The Lion freshman headlocked Park to his back and pinned him with 11 seconds left in the bout.
“Weyandt is a little fireplug,” Lazor said. “He just keeps chugging and chugging, and he finally he got one. He went into a shot, came up high, threw him and got a pin. What a better way to end, right?”
Ridge’s Luke Moore (138) won by major decision, while Austin Crouse edge Elliot Park, 3-1, at 182 and Kai Burkett shut out Owen Reinsel, 2-0, at 106.
Knisely and Dalton Seace (285) had the only pins against Burrell (13-4). McGill, who is now 30-0, racked up a 19-4 technical fall in 4:34, and Burkett followed with a 15-0 technical fall in 3:45. Crouse picked up an 8-0 major decision of Zach Rupert.
Nathan Holderbaum (113) earned a 12-8 decision over Nick Salerno, and Dull followed by taking Trent Valovchik down with less than 20 seconds left to win, 10-8.
The final score was a little deceiving as Lazor, with the Lions holding a 32-13 lead going into the last three weights, sent a backup to the mat at 138 and forfeited the last two weights.
“We knew the Burrell match was going to be a tough one,” Lazor said. “We had a lot of worries going into that one to be honest. Even up top, we were winning, but on our scorecard, we were back a couple points than we were expecting.
“Things weren’t looking that great, but then at 113 and 120 those two boys went out and battled and got some great wins for us when we were probably the underdog in. That Burrell victory was a big one.”
Burkett and McGill went 5-0 over three days, while Dull, Crouse, Knisely and Seace went 4-1.
The Lions will now get ready for next weekend’s District 5 Tournament.
Reynolds won its third straight PIAA Duals title with a 31-23 win over Southern Columbia.
