Ridge captures title

NEW PARIS — Chestnut Ridge had continued to show its dominance in District 5 this season – even with a lineup that includes four freshmen starters.

The Lions continued their reign on Saturday afternoon in their home gym by beating an improved Bedford, 52-14, in the District 5 Duals finals.

It was the seventh straight District 5 Duals title for the Lions.

“The young guys are really coming along and doing well, and the older guys are leading them right,” Ridge coach Greg Lazor said. “Things are rolling into place.

“(Wrestling Bedford) brought back some memories of the past. When I first came here, the roles were reversed, and they were the ones we were trying to knock down in the fortress. They had a nice day and wrestled hard.”

“I know our guys could do it once we got healthy,” Bedford first-year coach Joel Easter said. “We’ve fielded our best team the last two weekends. The guys have been wrestling good. Ridge is tough. They’re a good team. I was telling the guys afterward that’s where we want to be in a couple years. Ridge is in a class by themselves right now.”

Gryphon Callihan (126), freshman Luke Moore (138), unbeaten Jared McGill (170), Duane Knisely (220), Dalton Seace (285) and Kai Burkett (106) had pins for the Lions (12-0) against Bedford.

Nathan Holderbaum won by major decision, while freshman Daniel Moore (152) and Seth Holderbaum (160) had decisions. Austin Crouse (182) won by forfeit.

Bedford (8-5), which knocked off North Star, 37-31, in the semifinals, got a technical fall from Kaden Cassidy (132) and decisions from Nathan Gabriel (145), Owen Biddle (195) and Matt Emerick (120).

Ridge opened the day with a 59-12 win over Tussey Mountain.

Freshman Trevor Weyandt (132), Luke Moore (138), Daniel Moore (152), Seth Holderbaum (160), McGill (182), Burkett (106) and Nathan Holderbaum (113) had pins against Tussey Mountain.

Colton Riley (145) had Tussey’s lone pin, and Damon Lemin turned in a big 4-3 win over Crouse at 195.

Ashton Dull (182), Jaydin Vargas (220) and Noah Lynch (285) had Bedford’s pins against North Star. It was the 800thwin in the program’s history.

The Lions will wrestle District 7 runner-up Freedom Area in the first round of the PIAA Duals on Thursday at the Giant Center.

“It’s going to be exciting,” Lazor said. “It’s always going to be a battle. The way our young guys improved, I think they gave us a chance to possibly go down there and work for a medal. We’re going down there with the expectations that we have that possibility in us. We’ll go and see what we can do.”
