Lions knocked into consys at Hershey

HERSHEY – Chestnut Ridge came up three points short of reaching the PIAA Class 2A Duals finals for the second year in a row

And it was Southern Columbia stopping them again.

After a feisty start by Ridge, the Tigers, ranked second by PA Power Wrestling, recorded four pins in the last eight wins to beat the sixth-ranked Lions, 34-31, on Friday night at the Giant Center. Last year, Southern Columbia beat Ridge, 30-27, in the semifinals.

It was the first loss of the season for the now 14-1 Lions. Southern Columbia is 21-0 and will wrestle top-ranked Reynolds in the finals. Reynolds beat Saucon Valley, 46-20, in the semifinals.

“The boys wrestled great,” Ridge coach Greg Lazor said. “We showed a lot of heart, and I couldn’t be prouder. They are hurting a little right now, but we need to regroup and finish the job.”

Ridge was able to bounce back and take third place last season.

The Lions will wrestle again at 11 this morning in the consolation semifinals against the 9 a.m. consolation quarterfinal winner of District 6 champion Westmont Hilltop and Burrell. The consolation finals and championship finals are set for 1 p.m.

Ridge, which beat Hamburg, 42-18, in the quarterfinals, jumped out to a 13-3 lead as Kai Burkett won by fall in 1:31 at 106, Ross Dull rolled to a 12-1 major decision over Garrett Krebs at 120 and Gryphon Callihan pulled out a 2-1 tiebreaker win over Ian Yoder at 126.

“Callihan has been in so many close ones against really good kids,” Lazor said. “He has worked so hard. It was great to see him learn to come out on top of that match.”

After Patrick Edmonson got a key win for the Tigers with a 3-2 victory over Trevor Weyandt at 132, Ridge’s Luke Moore beat Michael Miner, 9-5, at 138 to make the score 16-6.

But first-period pins by Gavin Garcia (145), Shane Miller (152) and Cade Linn (160) gave the Tigers a 24-16 lead.

Ridge’s Jared McGill stopped the run with a pin in 21 seconds at 170, and Austin Crouse eked out a 2-1 win over Tyler Waltman at 182 to give the Lions the lead, 25-24.

That was Ridge’s last lead as Preston Zachman majored Brodie Harbaugh, 15-7, at 1955, and unbeaten Gaige Garcia pinned Duane Knisely at 220. With the win in hand, the Tigers forfeited to Dalton Seace at 285.

Against District 3 champion Hamburg, the Lions charged out to a 21-0 lead after the first four weights. Knisely (220), Seace (285) and Nathan Holderbaum (113) won by fall, and Burkett (106) earned a 7-0 decision over Parker Davidson.

“We started off in a good spot,” Lazor said. “They bumped their 195-pounder up to 220, and when we got a six there, that they lost their anchor at the end.”

Hamburg’s Bailey and Dalton Gimbor picked up decisions at 120 and 126, respectively, before Weyandt picked up an 8-6 decision over Kyle Vernon at 132.

A couple more decisions by Hamburg’s Luke Strausser (138) and Ayden Kauffman (145) closed the margin to 12, 24-12.

But Daniel Moore’s 10-9 overtime win over Brant Mason at 152 started another Ridge run. Seth Holderbaum followed with a forfeit win at 160, and McGill recorded a pin in 45 seconds at 170.

After a pin by Hamburg’s Nick James, Harbaugh closed it out with a 7-4 win over Travis Colson at 195.

“The young guys really stepped it up and gave some really good battles against their better kids,” Lazor said. ”
