The golf season in our area begins to wind down each year with the playing of the annual Greater Altoona Golf Tournament.

It’s no different this year as Summit and Scotch Valley country clubs play host to the 42nd annual event Saturday and Sunday.

Last year’s individual winners, Anthony DeGol and Michelle Day, will both be back to defend their titles this weekend, along with eight-time men’s champ Artie Fink Jr. and 13-time women’s titleholder Gwen Paden.

Fink also holds the men’s scoring record of 135 after scoring rounds of 66 and 69 in 2009. Samantha Formeck has the women’s record of 145 (71-74) while playing for Scotch Valley in 2007.

The tournament, which began in 1978, features four of the top men and women golfers from each of five courses in the greater Altoona area: Park Hills, Scotch Valley, Sinking Valley, Iron Masters and Summit.

Two rounds are played to determine an individual champion while team champions are decided by using the three best scores from each club over the same two rounds.

Last year’s team title was won by the Sinking Valley men. The Tyrone-area club has dominated the team competition on the men’s side over the years, winning an amazing 27 times.

The defending women’s foursome is from Scotch Valley. Their win last year was the sixth in club history, second only to the Iron Masters’ women with 25 titles.

This year’s tournament will start Saturday morning at Summit Country Club and conclude Sunday afternoon at Scotch Valley.
