Altoona duo wins flight

Altoona Area High School sophomores Isabella Frank and Eve Hogan won the No. 1 doubles flight of the 2018 Mountain Lion Girls Tennis Invitational, held at Penn State Altoona and Gorilla House on Friday and Saturday.

Frank and Hogan went 2-1 in the four-team round-robin tournament. Abington Heights won the team title on a tiebreaker over Conestoga Valley, and Altoona finished third.

Altoona’s Alese Rinker finished second at No. 1 singles, and Emma Skelley (No. 2 singles), Zoe Wilson (No. 3 singles) and Alyson Hollingsworth and Emily Neil (No. 2 doubles) placed third.

Altoona jayvees fifth

MCMURRAY — The Altoona junior varsity girls volleyball team finished fifth at the Peters Township JV Invitational.

Altoona beat Chartiers Valley (25-18, 25-19) and lost to Serra Catholic (25-18, 25-18) and Baldwin (25-21, 25-23) in pool play. In the quarterfinals, Altoona lost to Thomas Jefferson, 25-21.

Altoona’s Andrea Kiser was named to the all-tourney team. She had 18 service points, nine kills and seven aces to go with Kassie Clawson’s 22 kills and 24 digs. Jaylyn Long added 41 assists.

AAHS girls ninth

KUTZTOWN — The Altoona Area High School girls cross country team finished ninth out of 33 teams in the Blue Division of the Penn Track XC 10 presented by Brooks at Kutztown University’s Farm Course on Saturday.

Freshman Mackenzie Kelley finished 39th in a field of 233 runs in a time of 22:06 for the Lady Lions.

The Altoona boys were 22nd out of 26 teams in the Gold Division with junior Brayden Henninger placing 66 out of 194 runners in a time of 17:32.

Bedford sophomore Van May finished 39th in the Gold Division with a time of 17:06.
