PSU women prevail again

VALENCIA, Spain — The Penn State women’s basketball team used a strong second half to erase a 13-point deficit en route to an 87-80 come-from-behind win over the Valencia All-Stars Tuesday evening.

The game served as the second of three exhibition contests for the Lady Lions, who are in the midst of a 10-day trip to Spain from Aug. 9-18. Penn State, now 2-0 on the international tour, won its first game of the trip Saturday, 108-81 over CD CREF Madrid in Madrid.

Rising sophomore Kamaria McDaniel led the way with 29 points, 19 of which came in the second half. Classmate Alisia Smith followed with 19 points. Junior Siyeh Frazier put together a 12-point effort.

CC hires new coach

EBENSBURG — The Central Cambria School District approved Megan Gould as its new varsity softball coach at a board meeting Monday night.

Gould takes over for Jamie Mazzarella, who had led the Lady Devils program for the past seven years.

Bear Rock shoot set

LILLY — Bear Rock Sportsmen’s Association will hold a 3D archery shoot on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. each day.

SFU’s Lewis honored

LORETTO — Saint Francis senior receiver Kamron Lewis collected another preseason honor on Monday, being named Preseason Third Team All-America by College Sports Madness.

Lewis added to his list of preseason accolades, which includes All-America selections by HERO Sports and STATS FCS as well as being named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List. Lewis is one of SFU’s 21 Preseason All-America selections since 2015.

The Fresno, Calif. native caught 65 passes for 909 yards and six touchdowns.

PSU picked fourth

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The No. 6-ranked Penn State women’s volleyball team was picked to finish fourth in the Big Ten, according to the Big Ten women’s volleyball coaches’ poll announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Additionally, graduate student Taylor Leath and junior Kendall White were named to the 2018 Preseason All-Big Ten Volleyball team.

Leath, a native of Port Matilda, enters her first season with the Nittany Lions after four years at the University of North Carolina.

White, a native of Zionsville, Ind., was All-Big Ten last season.
