IUP opens with impressive road win

ASHLAND, Kentucky — Make it two in a row for the IUP football team.

The 2018 season opener at Jack Miller Stadium Thursday night saw Ashland, ranked No. 15 in the country in Division II, lose for the second consecutive season to No. 4-ranked IUP, 21-17.

Ashland lost at home in a regular-season game for the first time since 2013.

To begin the 2017 season, the Eagles lost at then-No. 9 IUP, 26-23, on a last-second field goal, in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The big IUP offensive connection was senior quarterback Lenny Williams Jr. to senior wide receiver Ricky Rogers. Williams and Rogers combined for three touchdown passes, with Williams finishing 19-for-28 for 214 yards, and Rogers catching six passes for 73 yards.

IUP’s first Williams-to-Rogers score came with 2:06 left in the first quarter. IUP, which trailed at one point, 10-7, was up at halftime, 14-10.

The Crimson Hawks will have their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 6, against Millersville.
