Shepherd joining PSAC

LOCK HAVEN — The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced Thursday that Shepherd University has been admitted to the Conference for full-time membership, following a vote of approval by the PSAC Board of Directors on May 31.

Shepherd will officially become a PSAC member upon receipt of initiation fees, entitling the institution to voting privileges, and will begin regular season competition and be eligible for PSAC Championships in 2019-20.

Shepherd has been competing in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) since the league’s inception in 2013.

Reports: Edelman being suspended

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Speaking for the first time at the Patriots’ minicamp, Tom Brady could have had plenty to talk about had he waited a few hours.

Instead, reports broke later Thursday that one of the New England quarterback’s favorite receivers, Julian Edelman, could be suspended for violating the league’s performance-enhancers policy.

Edelman was the last player on the field for practice and later could be seen having a long talk with Patriots owner Robert Kraft. According to the report, the 32-year-old Edelman is appealing the suspension.

Owens won’t attend induction

Terrell Owens says he will not attend the induction ceremony for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, an unprecedented decision by an enshrinee.

Owens was voted into the hall in February. In a statement released Thursday by his publicist, Owens says: “While I am incredibly appreciative of this opportunity, I have made the decision to publicly decline my invitation to attend the induction ceremony in Canton.”

Mount names lacrosse coach

CRESSON — Mount Aloysius College vice president of student affairs Dr. Jane Grassadonia has announced that Danielle O’Leary has been named the head coach of Mount Aloysius’s first-ever women’s lacrosse team.

O’Leary joins Mount Aloysius from Hollins University, where she was the head lcoach for the past six years. Twice O’Leary’s teams were named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association Honor Squad for having a complete team GPA over 3.0.

While at Hollins, O’Leary also served as the senior woman administrator; a role that she will continue at Mount Aloysius. She was the chairperson for the school’s Chi Alpha Sigma Athletics Honor Society, which saw a 50 percent increase in inductees during her tenure. O’Leary also spent one year coaching Valley Select Lacrosse, a Roanoke area travel lacrosse team.

A 2010 graduate of New England College, O’Leary was a two-sport performer for the Pilgrims. She was a defensive standout for their women’s lacrosse team, starting in 61 of her teams 66 games during her four-year career.

US women beat China

SANDY, Utah — Alex Morgan scored on a header in the 57th minute and the U.S. national team beat China 1-0 in an exhibition match Thursday night.

The teams also will meet Tuesday night in Cleveland.

The United States, the defending World Cup champion, is preparing for CONCACAF qualifying in October.
