Claysburg, P-O softball staying close to home

The Claysburg-Kimmel and Philipsburg-Osceola softball teams will stay within District 6 on Monday as they attempt to make it to their respective PIAA championship games later this week.

The Lady Bulldogs will take on District 11 champion Williams Valley at the Milesburg Little League Complex at 4 p.m. in the Class 1A semifinals on Monday. They will play the winner of defending state champion West Greene and Monessen. That game is at Peters Township High School at 2 p.m. The 1A championship game is Thursday at 11 a.m. at Penn State University.

The Lady Mounties return to the site of their PIAA quarterfinal win when they take on WPIAL champion Southmoreland at Saint Francis University at 5 p.m. on Monday in the Class 3A semifinals. Southmoreland defeated District 6 runner-up Central, 10-7, in the first round. The winner of that game will play the winner of Holy Redeemer and North Schuylkill on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Penn State University.

In regional action, Mount Union will play Mohawk at Heindl Field in DuBois in the Class 2A softball semifinals, and Southern Fulton’s baseball team will take on District 4 champion Sayre at Bald Eagle Area High School in the Class 1A semifinals on Monday.

Booker T. tourney set

The 10th annual Booker T. Washington 3-on-3 Basketball Competition will be held today from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Booker T. Washington basketball court located at the corner of 13th Avenue and 19th Street in Altoona.

The competition features student teams ranging from grades 4 through 12 and is one of the primary fundraisers for the group’s ongoing efforts to rebuild area parks.

Before the tournament kicks off, the BTW Committee will be presenting the fourth Charlie Ditcher Good Neighbor Award to an individual whose volunteer contributions have left a lasting positive impact.

The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be available for purchase.
