Tigers capture D6 title

STATE COLLEGE — Hollidaysburg, the second seed in the District 6 Class 3A high school tennis playoffs, knocked off top-seeded State College, 3-2, in the finals on Wednesday.

Rami Alkhafaji and Anthony Menard won at No 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

The team of Nick Viduya and David Auerbeck won in three sets at No. 1 doubles to clinch the title.

“What an incredible high school tennis match. The atmosphere was electric, and the intensity was off the chart,” Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said. “I am so proud of my kids — especially my core of seniors. I’ve been with these guys since they were in fourth or fifth grade, and they played with an unbelievable amount of passion today.

“They stepped up on the biggest stage, and they will have these wonderful memories for the rest of their lives that they will never forget. They are each other’s biggest fans and supporters and we needed every ounce of it today. What a storybook season it has been so far, and we’re excited to play some more tennis next week.”

Owen Lloyd won at No. 2 singles for the Little Lions, and the team of Sankar Ramesh and Shreyas Sundar won at No. 2 doubles.

The Golden Tigers improved to 17-0, while State College fell to 11-2.

Hollidaysburg will play the runner-up in District 3 next Tuesday in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
