Ready or not, playoffs are here

Huntingdon gets top seed in Class 3A tournament

The Huntingdon Area High School baseball team has rolled through the regular season.

However, the Bearcats could be tested as they make their bid to repeat as District 6 Class 3A champions.

Based on the power-rating formula, Huntingdon garnered the No. 1 seed in 3A when District 6 unveiled its brackets in four classifications on Thursday morning. The reward for that, though, is a potential meeting with defending PIAA champion Central in the quarterfinals and, possibly, a date with Penn Cambria and Major League Baseball draft prospect Mason Ronan in the semifinals.

The tournament in the four lowest classes begins next week. Central kicks things off when it hosts Philipsburg-Osceola in a 9-vs.-8 clash on Monday. The winner of that game will travel to face Huntingdon on Tuesday.

Although the Bearcats made it to the state semifinals last season and only have been beaten once this year, neither of those options will be easy. Central played Huntingdon to a 9-9 tie in a game that was suspended on Wednesday, while P-O lost to the Bearcats on a seventh-inning run in the first game of a Mountain League doubleheader earlier this week.

Penn Cambria will host Ligonier Valley on Tuesday with a spot in the semifinals at stake.

The championship games are scheduled for Peoples Natural Gas Field on Wednesday, May 23 and Thursday, May 24. May 25 will be used as a rain date.

Bishop Guilfoyle drew the second seed in Class 2A and will open the playoffs on Tuesday by hosting Blairsville at Vets Field. Should the Marauders win that game, they would host an area team — the winner of third-seeded Bellwood-Antis and sixth-ranked Portage — in the semifinals; that game is tentatively slated for May 18 but might need to be played on another day because of a conflict with Guilfoyle’s graduation.

Bishop McCort is the top seed in 2A.

At No. 3, Juniata Valley is the highest seed from the Mirror coverage area, and Claysburg-Kimmel is fourth. Valley will host Blacklick Valley and Claysburg will entertain Saltsburg in quarterfinal action on Tuesday.

Bishop Carroll will travel to top-seeded Homer-Center that afternoon.

The seeding and bracket in Class 6A and Class 5A are to be released on May 17.

District 6 softball teams have until this morning to declare their intentions whether or not to enter the postseason. Thursday night was the cutoff for results to determine playoff seeding.
