Mount going to NCAA postseason party

BUFFALO – The Mount Aloysius Softball team captured the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship Sunday afternoon, thanks to a 6-3 win over Penn State Behrend.

The Lady Mounties beat the No. 1 seed in the tourney to qualify for the NCAA postseason. They will find out their opponent later today after the selection meeting.

The Mounties (21-13) fell behind early, 2-0, before battling back to take the lead. After allowing two runs in the first two frames, the Mounties put up five runs in the bottom of the second for a 5-2 lead. Catcher Lydia DeFazio led off the inning with a single. The next batter, Bri Benscoter, dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but was able to reach second on a PSU-Behrend error.

DeFazio scored on a wild pitch, and after Karly Klein also reached on an error, Kara Pisczek singled through the left side of the infield to tie the game. The Mounties successfully used a double steal to score the go-ahead runk. Kate Little put an exclamation point on the inning with a double to the the left-center gap. She later scored on a Kayla Hopkins RBI single.

Penn State Behrend attempted a rally in the next inning, but Hannah Ruby was able to get out of a bases-loaded no-out jam by only surrendering one run to cut the deficit to 5-3. She dominated from there, allowing two hits over the last four innings to seal the Mounties victory.

Ruby’s performance included a stretch where she retired five straight batters on only five pitches. The Mounties tacked on a security run in the sixth when Little singled up the middle to score Klein.

Ruby picked up her 11th win of the season scattering six hits over seven innings, allowing one earned run. She was named to the AMCC All-Tournament team. Joining here were DeFazio and centerfielder Courtney Link. DeFazio hit .363 for the tournament while Link hit .416.
