Martelacci spearheads Bavarian

Bryce Martellaci had a triple, a double and two RBIs, while Kyle Wilson came up with three hits as Bavarian Hall knocked off Shag, 11-4, in Altoona Teener Major action at Seitz Field.

Winning pitcher Steve Hartman helped himself with two hits while striking out seven, and Brandon Murphy added two hits for Bavarian. Josh Merrits and Marcus Lucas each had two hits for Shag.

Tourney on tap

The rosters are set for the second annual Eldorado Kiwanis Invitational 3-on-3 basketball tournament to be held today on the Dick Richards courts located on the club’s premises in Altoona.

The men open up at 8:30 a.m., concluding with a 10:30 a.m. final. The women begin at 11:30 a.m., rounding out the day with a 1:30 a.m start to determine the champion.

The men’s roster includes: Chris Buchanan, Damian Schimminger, Jesse Betar and D.J. Patterson on Team 1; Tyler Smith, Mike Beattie, Steven Hankle and Steven Beattie on Team 2; Fred Buck, Dom Vescovi, Ian Vescovi and Isaac Vescovi on Team 3; and Ryan McGarvey, Dave Rizzo, Darren Galbraith and Nathan Davis on Team 4.

The women’s roster includes: Alli Williams, Kristi Little-Kaack, Marrysa Moyer and Shelby Reimer on Team 1; Carmella Bickel, Lillyauna Bickel, Makayla Carles and Frances Czeponis on Team 2; Bridgid Fox, Olivia Hudson, Halle Herrington and Victoria Koeck on Team 3; and Kaley Strittmatter, Ireland Pelletier, Kasey Engle and Makalyn Clapper on Team 4.

Both championship games will be videotaped and later aired on local Access Channel 14.

Rugby season completed

LANCASTER — The Blair United/Hollidaysburg Area Rugby Club lost to the Hempfield Area Rugby Club, 31-17, in a Rugby PA State Championship playoff matchup recently, bringing an end to its season.

At the 25-minute mark, Hempfield took a UnitBU/Hollidaysburg turnover and scored its first try for a 7-0 lead. Another turnover on the kickoff doomed the locals as Hempfield took a 14-0 lead and later led 24-0 at halftime.

In the second half, the locals used three tries — by Trenton Paddock, Gus Dellinger and Jailin Rhodes to score. Dellinger’s try cut the lead to 24-17.

The locals team finished the season 6-4. The Man of the Match was Jailin Rhodes, a senior from Altoona.

Track notes

n Central Cambria’s Zachary Shoff qualified for the PIAA Track and Field Championships by finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles on Tuesday in the District 6 Class 2A meet.

n Hollidaysburg’s Allison Barton will compete in the 400-meter dash at the state meet after District 6 3A champion Casie Eifrig of State College scratched from that event. Barton was the district runner-up.
