Ketterman enjoys stellar day

LOYSBURG — Everett Area senior Stefanie Ketterman is a veteran performer in the PIAA Class 2A state girls track and field meet.

Ketterman will be making her second straight appearance in three events — the triple jump, high jump and long jump — at the state championship meet in Shippensburg University next weekend.

She won all three events Wednesday afternoon in the District 5 Class 2A meet held at Northern Bedford County High School’s Panther Community Stadium.

Ketterman won the triple jump with an effort of 34 feet, 2 inches, the long jump with an effort of 16 feet, 6 § inches, and the high jump with an effort of 5 feet.

Ketterman, who will be making her fourth appearance in the state meet in the triple jump, was grateful after earning another trip to Shippensburg on Wednesday. She will be seeking her first state medal next weekend.

“It’s a blessing,” Ketterman said. “My goal this year will just be to compete better than I have in the past couple of years, get better times and distances, and have fun.”

Ketterman’s favorite event is the triple jump, and she won it after entering the event as the meet’s top seed.

“I knew that I was seeded first, but there were a lot of girls in the event who had very good distances and were capable of pulling off a jump better than I did today,” Ketterman said.

Ketterman was seeded second in the high jump, and won that with a jump of 5 feet.

“Five feet has been a struggle for me,” Ketterman said. “Getting it on the first attempt today made me feel good.”

Ketterman was not among the top seeds in the long jump, but she came through with the win in that event nonetheless.

“To place first in that event was something that I wasn’t expecting,” Ketterman said. “To win that was one of the best feelings.”

Everett sophomore Kaitlyn Maxwell won the 800 run with a district-record performance of 2:19.70 and the 400 dash with a time of 57.94.

Maxwell was appreciative of the competition that she faced in both events. Maxwell nosed out Shade’s Lorna Speigle — who registered a time of 58 seconds — in the 400 dash.

In the 800, Maxwell edged past Shade’s Emily Coddington, who also registered a state-qualifying time of 2:19.98.

“The 400 time was my personal best,” Maxwell said. “Lorna Spiegle is really fast, and she pushed me to run my fastest. In the 800, I wanted to better my own school record of 2:20. I had a desire not to lose. Emily Coddington is really fast. I didn’t realize that she had that much of a kick. Both of us made it to states in that event, so that is very exciting.”

Bedford senior Jaden Fuller said she gave it her all while winning the 200 dash in 26.30.

“The key for me was to definitely stay strong for the whole race,” Fuller said. “I pushed all the way to the end. It’s all about finishing in that event. You have to finish. I gave it everything that I had.”

Northern Bedford’s Mackenzie Troutman was another area champion, winning the pole vault with an effort of nine feet even.

Meet notes: Berlin Brothersvalley won the team championship with a score of 108 points. Bedford was second with 79 and Shade was third with 75.
